Record attendance for the London Sevens

A record number of fans will descend on Twickenham Stadium this weekend for the Emirates Airline London Sevens (May 23 & 24).

Over 50 thousand tickets have been sold for the two day event which sees 16 top international sides pitting their wits across a packed weekend of 44 games.

And England have everything to play for. With just two legs left in this year’s IRB Sevens World Series remaining, the home side need to pick up full points if they are to close the 28-point gap between themselves and Series leaders South Africa, and fend off the impressive Fijians, who trail them by just two points.

The action kicks off with leaders South Africa taking on Sevens World Champions Wales (11.35am, Saturday May 23). Other highlights include New Zealand v Canada (1.25pm) and Fiji v Kenya (7.49pm), before England take on Samoa later that evening (8.33pm).

Kenya scored the opening two tries before Tu Umaga-Marshall touched down after the halftime hooter to reduce Kenya's lead to 14-7 at the break.

The Kenyans then extended their advantage with the opening try in the second half to kill off any New Zealand fightback.

Kenya had lost its first match of the day to Uruguay before beating France, and now advances to the quarterfinals along with New Zealand, who beat France and Uruguay

This was United’s fifth 1-0 away win this season, which you have to say is championship form, operating with a metronome beat that rings ominously for the Reds’ title rivals.

United, still missing Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra, and also without skipper Gary Neville, started the match with two games in hand on closest rivals Liverpool, who somewhat fortunately went a point ahead at the top of the league on Saturday when Fernando Torres snatched a last-gasp 3-2 win against Portsmouth.

Regaining top spot was clearly the priority, but it was never going to be an easy ride. Being the league’s form team, with an increasingly more potent attack and a record-breaking defence, the chances of achieving it appeared positive. But West Ham are themselves third in the form table with four wins and two draws from their last six league games.

Dubai Sevens Rugby World Cup

The Dubai Sevens Rugby World Cup will take place March 5th to 7th.

Kenya, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, will each have a team at the Dubai Sevens Rugby World Cup scheduled for March 2009 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Kenya, Tunisia and Zimbabwe were Africa qualifiers and South Africa was an automatic qualifier. Zimbabwe beat Namibia 29-10 and Kenya beat Tunisia 22-12 in the semi finals. Kenya beat Zimbabwe 26-14 to qualify for the Rugby World Cup. Tunisia beat Namibia, 26-12 for the final spot at the Rugby World Cup.

There are only two African female rugby teams in the Rugby World Cup–Uganda and South Africa. The appearance is particularly exciting for the Ugandan team, Lady Cranes, who are the first ever sports team from their country to reach the final stages of a World Cup event.

Tottenham Hotspur were held by 10-man Arsenal in the north London derby at White Hart Lane.

Emmanuel Eboue was sent off after 37 minutes for a foul on Luka Modric having already been booked for dissent.It was a double blow for the Gunners who lost striker Emmanuel Adebayor with a nasty-looking hamstring injury at the same time.

Robbie Keane had led the Spurs attack on his return from Liverpool, and went close with a header while Alex Song missed the best chance for the Gunners, who had new signing Andrei Arshavin on the bench.

Kenya pulled themselves back into it with a try to Gibson Kahuthia, which wasn't converted

South Africa regained the lead one minute out from the break with a unconverted try.

Kenyan star Collins Ingera touched down with three minutes remaining and the conversion wide-out squared things up at 17 all. South Africa began to feel the pinch with knock-on's stalling their chance of a win.

Ingera created the boilover of the tournament with a try in the dying stages to seal the 22-17 win. The win is the first for Kenya in 18 games against South Africa..

England wallop New Zealand

Ben Gollings held his nerve to convert Isoa Damu's breakaway try in the dying seconds to beat New Zealand by the slender margin of two points and claim a first NZI Sevens title for England.

New Zealand looked on course for victory after leading throughout but England captain Ollie Phillips inspired the fightback and Damu's try at the death pulled the English level, leaving Gollings with a conversion in front of the posts.

At the end of the NZI Sevens in Wellington South Africa remain top of the IRB Sevens World Series standings with 48 points, having won the Plate, ahead of England and New Zealand on 44 points. Argentina and Fiji lie a further 16 points behind on 28
